ECONOMY

Qatar is one of the countries with the highest per capita GDP in the world, and generally ranks among the top ten in the 2015 and 2016 rankings of the world's richest countries compiled by the World Bank, the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Oil and gas are the cornerstone of Qatar's economy, accounting for more than 70% of total government revenue, more than 60% of GDP and around 85% of export earnings. Qatar has the world's third-largest proven natural gas reserves and is the second-largest exporter of natural gas.

Before the advent of an oil-based industry, Qatar was a poor pearl-digging nation. In 1939 began to explore oil and gas fields. In 1973, a substantial increase in oil production and income lifted Qatar from the ranks of the world's poorest countries to one of the highest per capita incomes in the world.
